Weather

December in London is generally mild, but it can feel chilly and humid. Expect cold mornings and rain every few days. The weather changes quickly here, but extreme storms or disasters are very rare.

Average temperatures are around 9°C / 48°F during the day and 5°C / 41°F at night. You’ll probably experience about 10 rainy days throughout the month.

London’s climate is temperate — which means it’s not extremely cold or harsh. While it can be frosty and occasionally wet, major storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, or earthquakes don’t happen.

The weather can shift fast, so it’s smart to pack warm layers and waterproof clothing. Snow is possible but uncommon in December — it usually falls more in January and February. Rain is far more likely, so don’t count on a White Christmas.

Daylight hours

December 21 is considered the shortest day in London, with only 7 hours and 49 minutes of daylight. The night on this date is the longest, lasting around 16 hours and 11 minutes.

If we talk in general or average terms for the whole month, then:

Sunrise: Between 7:45 am and 8:15 am
Sunset: Between 4:30 pm and 4:40 pm

The days are shorter and the nights are noticeably longer. So if you’re planning to explore the city in December, you’ll naturally end up spending more time outdoors after dark. My grandmother once advised me, “Danish, sleep during the day and explore at night. Nature feels closer to a person after sunset.” I’ve always loved those words.

What to pack

December in London is chilly, damp, and windy, so smart dressing is important. Bring a good coat, warm layers, waterproof boots, and an umbrella to stay comfortable while exploring the city.

A wool-blend coat or cozy parka works best to protect against cold winds and light rain. Don’t forget a hat, gloves, and a scarf, because your neck and ears get cold the fastest. Waterproof boots and good socks are essential, as streets can be wet or slippery.

Jeans or warm trousers are fine, but trousers are better if rain or damp weather is expected. If you wear skirts or dresses, pair them with thick tights — it keeps you warm and stylish. Knitwear and thermal layers are especially useful in December, when you’ll move between indoors and outdoors often.

Carry a lightweight rucksack or bag to keep your scarf, gloves, water bottle, and umbrella handy. Don’t forget a windproof umbrella, moisturizer and lip balm (winter can dry your skin), and a contactless card or Oyster card holder for travel.

14 Things to do in London in December

There’s so much to do in London, but of course, we can’t do everything. Still, here are a few of my personal favorites that you can try too.

Visit London’s ice rinks

London’s Christmas season is amazing for ice skating, and each rink has its own unique vibe and setup. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland Ice Rink is the UK’s largest outdoor rink, filled with fairy lights and live bands. Canary Wharf Ice Rink sits between skyscrapers and hosts special themed nights like Disco Night and Country Music Night. Somerset House Ice Rink is set in a neoclassical courtyard with a giant Christmas tree, perfect for photos and festive vibes. Battersea Power Station Ice Rink is by the river, with multiple interconnected rinks and stunning views of the London skyline.

Each skating session usually lasts around 45 minutes, so it’s important to check tickets and timings. Wearing warm layers, gloves, a hat, and thick socks is essential to fully enjoy the cold and skating experience.

Marvel at world-famous artworks at FRAMELESS

Frameless London is an immersive art experience located near Marble Arch. Here, classic artworks are shown in a digital and multi‑sensory way — meaning it’s not just about looking at paintings, you actually feel like you’re inside the art.

There are 4 different galleries: Beyond Reality, Colour in Motion, The World Around Us, and The Art of Abstraction. You can experience 42 masterpieces by 29 iconic artists like Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, and Gustav Klimt in a digital form. Each gallery combines music and technology to make the art come alive.

The address is 6 Marble Arch, London W1H 7AP. Opening times are weekdays 11 am–6 pm, Fridays 11 am–10 pm, Saturdays 10 am–10 pm, and Sundays 10 am–6 pm. Adult tickets cost around £28, child tickets around £18, and children under 3 are free. Visits usually take about 90 minutes.

Enjoy a peaceful stroll through Kensington Gardens

Kensington Gardens is one of the most beautiful and peaceful parks in London. It was once a private place for kings and rich families, but now it’s open for everyone. The park sits right in the middle of the city, yet when you walk inside, it feels like you’ve escaped far away from the noise and rush of London.

Everywhere you look, there are green trees, long walkways, and beautiful paths to explore. If you love nature, this place will feel like a dream. Inside the park, there are some famous spots too — like the Albert Memorial, a grand and stunning monument. Then there’s the Italian Gardens, where fountains and small pools of water create a calm and relaxing atmosphere.

For children, there’s something magical — the statue of Peter Pan, which is one of the most popular spots in the park. Standing there, it almost feels like the story has come to life. There are also some wilder parts of the park where nature is left to grow freely. You can see birds, squirrels, and feel the fresh air moving softly around you.

The park opens early in the morning at 6 a.m. and stays open all day. There are small cafés and food stalls where you can grab a coffee or snack.

Visit Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is one of the most famous Christmas and winter events in London. This year it runs from 14 November 2025 to 1 January 2026. The whole Hyde Park is transformed into a magical festive wonderland.

There is something for everyone — rides, live shows, shopping stalls, and food & drink areas. People of all ages can enjoy it. The open-air ice rink and the giant observation wheel are very popular attractions. There is also the Magical Ice Kingdom, where the snow and ice scenes look absolutely amazing.

There are cozy bars and street food stalls too, giving you the full winter vibe. It’s best to book tickets in advance because weekends and evenings get very crowded. Some rides and shows may have an extra charge.

Join a Christmas tour of London

This is a great choice for anyone who struggles to fit everything into their busy schedule during the festive season. Many visitors prefer guided options so they don’t miss out on any of London’s special winter highlights.

For a true local experience, you can join a guided walking tour or see the sights from an open-top bus. These tours take you through London’s most festive spots — from sparkling Christmas markets and twinkling street lights to peaceful church carols and scenic Thames-side views.

Each route covers different parts of the city, so you can pick the ones that match your interests and enjoy a magical, stress-free London adventure.

Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace

The Changing of the Guard is one of the most famous ceremonies in London. It takes place right in front of Buckingham Palace. In this ceremony, the old guards hand over their duty to the new ones — it’s like the official change of palace security. The full ceremony usually happens on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11 a.m. During that time, the soldiers march in perfect rhythm, the band plays royal music, and people from all over the world gather to watch.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, there isn’t a full ceremony — only a small “Captain’s Inspection” takes place around 3 p.m. Sundays are a bit different; there’s a parade with the guards and the national anthem is played as they march the Colour back to St James’s Palace.

The best part is that watching the ceremony is completely free — you don’t need any ticket. But sometimes the schedule changes, so it’s better to check the official website before you go.

Buckingham Palace is right in the center of London, and it’s very easy to reach. The nearest underground stations are Green Park and St James’s Park — both are about a 10-minute walk away. Buses also stop close to the palace, but driving there isn’t a great idea because parking is hard to find and the area falls inside the congestion zone.

When the ceremony happens, it gets pretty crowded, so it’s smart to arrive early. And remember, when the guards march, don’t stand in their path — if someone blocks the way, they’ll shout loudly, “Make way for The King’s Guard!”

Hogwarts in the Snow

Hogwarts in the Snow is a special seasonal event at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. During this event, the Harry Potter film sets are completely transformed with a winter and Christmas theme. The event runs from 15 November 2025 to 18 January 2026.

When you enter the Great Hall, it is decorated with festive trees, flying witches, holly, mistletoe, and a Hogwarts-style feast. The Gryffindor and Slytherin common rooms are also decorated for Christmas, with even film crew Christmas cards on display. The Forbidden Forest and Diagon Alley areas feel magical and snowy, completely bringing the winter theme to life.

The highlight is the Hogwarts Castle model, fully covered in snow with tiny hidden snowman figures that you can try to spot. All of this is included with the ticket, and booking in advance is necessary.

Don’t miss the revival of Arthur Miller’s masterpiece All My Sons

“All My Sons” is running at Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End. It’s the famous drama by Arthur Miller, directed by Ivo Van Hove. The cast includes Bryan Cranston as Joe Keller, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Paapa Essiedu.

The story revolves around Joe Keller and his family. During the war, some decisions by his company led to the deaths of pilots. Now the truth is coming out, and the play explores the conflict between family loyalty and moral responsibility.

The play runs from 14 November 2025 to 7 March 2026. Show times are Tuesday to Saturday at 7:30 pm, with additional matinee performances on Wednesday and Saturday at 2:30 pm.

Book your seats for The Nutcracker at London Coliseum

The Nutcracker is the classic ballet by English National Ballet, performing at London’s London Coliseum. The story follows a girl named Clara who receives a magical Nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. She is then transported into a fantasy world where toy soldiers battle mice, and her journey continues to the “Land of Sweets & Delights.”

The show runs from 11 December 2025 to 11 January 2026. The duration is about 2 hours, including an interval. It’s suitable for ages 5 and above.

Highlights include over 100 dancers and musicians, with Tchaikovsky’s iconic music performed by a live orchestra. The sets and costumes are spectacular — featuring Edwardian London, sweets-themed decorations, snow, and fantasy elements.

Visit Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland

Southbank Centre is a major arts hub in London and the UK’s largest arts centre. It’s at the heart of London’s cultural life. Their “Festivals & Series” section runs across different seasons and themes, covering music, performance, dance, art, and family events.

  • Classical Music – focusing on contemporary and 21st-century music.

Toast to 2026 on a festive New Year’s Eve river cruise

In London, Thames river cruises and tours are a fantastic way to celebrate New Year’s Eve. There are dinner cruises, party boats, and live music options specially planned for watching the midnight fireworks.

The cruises come in different styles — a luxury dinner cruise with a 3-course meal, champagne, and live entertainment; or a fun party cruise with DJ, dancing, and amazing views of London’s skyline along with the fireworks.

Booking in advance is important because these tours are very popular. Some cruises are adults only, while family-friendly options are also available.

Visit Chelsea Winter Village

Chelsea Winter Village takes place at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. Set among historic buildings, it creates a festive winter wonderland.

The Light Trail is 1.5 km long and features interactive light installations, glowing archways, neon trees, and sound-effect art installations. This part requires a ticket.

The Winter Village area has free entry (apart from the trail ticket). Here you can enjoy a Christmas market, festive bars, street food, fire-pits, and live music.

Timing: Gates open daily from 16:30; Light Trail closes around 22:00, and the village closes around 23:00

Chelsea Winter Village is special because it combines lights, food, music, and festive vibes all in one. Perfect for an evening walk and soaking up the Christmas spirit.

Reserve your seats for Into the Woods at Bridge Theatre

“Into the Woods” is a musical by Stephen Sondheim (music & lyrics) and James Lapine (book). The show is running at Bridge Theatre, London from 2 December 2025 to 18 April 2026.

The story mixes popular fairytales — Cinderella, Little Red Riding-Hood, Jack & the Beanstalk, Rapunzel — and explores their wishes, consequences, and the darker side of “happily ever after.”

Venue: Bridge Theatre, 3 Potters Fields Park, London SE1 2SG
Show timings: Monday to Saturday evenings at 7:30pm, with matinees on Thursday & Saturday at 2:30pm
Age recommendation: 10+ due to mature themes
Tickets: Adults from approx £31.25+, prices vary

This show is special because Sondheim’s score is timeless, and it’s the first major revival in London since 2016.

Feast at Soho’s coolest new pizza restaurant Ria’s

Ria’s London is a casual and cool restaurant located in Notting Hill at 29 All Saints Rd, W11 1HE. They serve an amazing combo of pizza slices and drinks, with the tagline “glass ’n a slice.”

It’s recommended to book, especially on weekends or busy hours, but there is some space for walk-ins as well. The restaurant has a friendly and relaxed vibe. Dogs are allowed upstairs, but unfortunately not in the downstairs “The Cave” area.

Meat is not halal, and gluten-free pizza is not available, but there are vegan and vegetarian options. Ria’s London is perfect for a casual outing, hanging out with friends, or a quick pizza break.

Shows are for 18+ only, and tickets sell out fast, so booking early is a good idea. Each night is different because the line-up can change, but one thing is sure — you’ll have a night full of fun and laughter.

Angel Comedy at The Bill Murray

After Zuaya and Fraser Suites, if you’re looking for a fun night out in London, Angel Comedy at The Bill Murray is a perfect spot. The shows are 18+ and feature a mix of up-and-coming comedians and some well-known names, so every night is full of laughs. The venue is small and intimate, giving a close-up experience where you really feel the energy. Tickets are affordable, and the relaxed vibe makes it ideal for a casual night out with friends or anyone who loves live comedy.

The 99 Club

This is my favourite one for a proper laugh in London — The 99 Club in Leicester Square. It’s a small but lively comedy club where the energy is amazing, and you feel close to the stage. The shows have a mix of big-name comedians you might know from TV, like Live at the Apollo or Mock the Week, and new up-and-coming talent, so every night is full of surprises and laughs.

The venue is very intimate, which makes the experience personal and fun — you can hear every joke clearly and really feel the crowd’s reactions. Tickets are very affordable, starting around £10–£15, and all shows are for 18+, so the humor can be a bit bold. Its central West End location also makes it easy to combine the night with drinks or a casual walk around Leicester Square afterward.

Places to Eat and Drink in London

Margaux

If we talk about South Kensington in London, Margaux is one of those places where you get a classy vibe along with real taste. The food here is perfectly balanced — French-inspired with a modern twist. The first bite will make you feel that every dish combines both flavor and attention to detail. Their pork terrine, grilled veal rib, and porcini risotto are very popular, and if you like something soft and comforting, the Barolo braised beef is a must-try.

When it comes to drinks, this place is a paradise for wine lovers. Every table offers a unique wine experience, whether you go for a bottle or just a glass — everything feels premium. The wine list is so extensive that you can pick according to your mood, whether you want something soft and fruity or deep and bold.

Zuaya

If we move on from Margaux to another great spot in London, Zuaya in Kensington is perfect for vibrant Latin American flavors.

The food here is full of character, blending tastes from Peru, Mexico, and Brazil with a modern twist. Dishes are served sharing-style, so you can try a bit of everything — from grilled Iberian pork and Argentinian sirloin with chimichurri to tacos, ceviche, and grilled octopus. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available, making it easy for everyone to enjoy.

Zuaya’s bar is just as impressive, offering a wide range of signature cocktails and Latin American spirits. Drinks like “London to Lima” and “Black Forest,” made with Pisco, tequila, and exotic fruits, make the evening feel lively and fun.
